Jennifer Rubell – Nutcracker
Article posted by Afterglow on April 9, 2013
“Nutcrackers” consists of 18 store mannequins re-imagined and adapted to work as functional, life-size nutcrackers. The viewer interacts with the piece by placing a nut between the mannequins thighs and crushing it by closing the sculptures thighs.
The mannequins are all in an odalisque position, a comment on the polarised societal view of women as either sexual or threateningly powerful to men.
Created by American artist Jennifer Rubell, a proponent and producer of participatory artwork that is a hybrid of performance art, installation, and event.
